What is the production process of kitchen knives?

May 10, 2024

The production process of kitchen knives involves several key steps, which are detailed below:

1. Raw Material Selection And Preparation

The main raw material of kitchen knives is stainless steel because it has the characteristics of good toughness, high hardness, and easy polishing. In addition, ceramics are also a new tool material that has emerged in recent years. Its cutting edges are made of ceramics, which have the advantages of being lightweight, sharp, non-rusting, non-conductive, non-odorous, and easy to clean.

Raw materials are carefully screened to ensure uniform composition and high purity. This step is very critical to the subsequent production process, because the quality of raw materials directly affects the quality of the kitchen knife.

2.Cutting And Forging

Cut selected metal materials into appropriate size and shape.

Through forging, the raw material is heated to a certain temperature (such as above 1200°C) and then pressure is applied to perform plastic deformation to improve its structure and mechanical properties. Hammering, stretching and other operations make the cutter head and handle parts reach the predetermined shape.

3.Heat Treatment And Quenching

Heat treatment is to change the internal structure of metal and improve its hardness and toughness through heating and cooling.

Quenching is to rapidly cool the heated knife to harden its surface and form a hard shell that protects the blade. Rapid cooling during the quenching process will significantly change the hardness, toughness and wear resistance of the kitchen knife.

Precautions during the quenching process include factors such as the size of the pot, the type of coolant used, and the heating time, which will directly affect the quality of the kitchen knife produced.

4. Tempering

The hardened cutter head is then heat treated to recombine the microstructure through heating, reduce the hardness of the cutter head, enhance its toughness, and prevent it from becoming too brittle.

5. Grinding And Polishing

Grinding is the use of a grinding wheel or whetstone to sharpen the blade and edge of the blade smoother and sharper.

Polishing uses special polishing tools to make the surface of the knife smoother and brighter. These two steps can not only improve the aesthetics of the knife, but also improve its performance.

    6. Install The Knife Handle

The material of the knife handle is usually wood, plastic or metal. Its shape and size need to match the blade of the knife to ensure that the user can hold the knife comfortably and stably.

Attach the handle to the knife body to form a complete kitchen knife.

After the above steps, a kitchen knife is completed. However, this is only a basic overview of the production process and the actual process may vary depending on the manufacturer, materials and technology.
