How to remove rust from kitchen knives?

July 13, 2024

There are many ways to remove rust from kitchen knives. Here are some common methods:

Use White Vinegar: Pour an appropriate amount of white vinegar into a bowl, soak the blade of the kitchen knife in the white vinegar for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse it with clean water, and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth. This is because vinegar (HCOOH) can react chemically with the rust on the metal (Fe2O3) and decompose the rust.

Use Toothpaste: Squeeze an appropriate amount of toothpaste into a bowl, add an appropriate amount of water, and stir evenly. Soak the blade of the kitchen knife in toothpaste water for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with clean water and wipe it with a dry cloth. Abrasives and detergents in toothpaste can remove rust from metal surfaces.

Use Baking Soda: Wipe the rust on the surface of the kitchen knife with a soft cloth, then add an appropriate amount of baking soda and water to the bowl and stir into a paste. Soak the blade of the kitchen knife in the baking soda paste for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse it with clean water, and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth. Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can react chemically with the acidic substances in the rust to remove the rust.

Potato Peel Wiping Method: Wash and peel the potatoes, use the potato peels to wipe the rusty parts of the kitchen knife until the rust on the kitchen knife disappears. Afterwards, you can soak it in rice water for 12 to 24 hours.

Mechanical Rust Removal: Use sandpaper to remove the rust on the kitchen knife with a piece of fine sandpaper, wash it with water, and then soak it in rice water for 12 to 24 hours. Or rub, scrape or sandblast the contaminated surface with manual or electric tools to directly contact and remove the visible rust layer.

In addition, there are methods such as salt and lime juice, and the use of chemical rust removers. Please note that you should be particularly careful when using chemical rust removers, because they may contain harmful substances such as phosphoric acid or oxalic acid, and direct contact may harm the skin.

In order to keep the kitchen knife sharp and prevent rust, it is recommended to clean and maintain the kitchen knife regularly and avoid prolonged contact with moisture or food residue. At the same time, it is also very important to use appropriate sharpening tools and methods to keep the blade sharp.

If the rust is severe or difficult to remove, it is recommended to seek professional help to avoid damage to the knife or personal injury.
