About the LFGB and FDA.

July 12, 2024

The food safety test of knives has strict regulations in both American and European standards.

In the United States, food safety testing mainly follows the regulations of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). The FDA has a series of specific standards and requirements for food contact materials, including 21 CFR Part 177-2003, etc., and has formulated detailed testing standards for polymer substances. For metal products such as stainless steel, the FDA also has specific testing requirements, such as the total Cr content, chloroform soluble extracts and other items. These tests are designed to ensure that knives do not release harmful substances when in contact with food, ensuring the safety of food.

In Europe, food safety testing of knives mainly follows the directives and standards of the European Union. For example, the LFGB regulations make general and basic provisions for the safety requirements of food and various daily necessities that come into contact with it. All food and food-related daily necessities on the German market must comply with the basic provisions of the LFGB. Products that pass the LFGB test can be affixed with the LFGB knife and fork mark to prove that they meet German and European standards and do not contain toxic substances that are harmful to the human body. In addition, the EU also has requirements such as CE certification, and there are corresponding safety standards for food machinery and processing equipment, such as EN ISO 12100 and EN 60204-1.

In general, both American and European standards have strict requirements and regulations for food safety testing of knives. These tests are designed to ensure the safety of knives when in contact with food and protect the health of consumers. Therefore, for knife products exported to the United States or Europe, manufacturers need to strictly abide by relevant standards and regulations and conduct necessary testing and certification to ensure that the products meet the requirements of the local market.
